US Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) wants to make sure the Federal Communications Commission never interferes with "states' rights" to protect private Internet service providers from having to compete against municipal broadband networks.

Twenty states have passed laws making it difficult for cities and towns to offer their own broadband Internet services, and FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has pledged to use his agency's authority to "preempt state laws that ban competition from community broadband."

He may get a chance to make good on that promise soon. EPB, a community-owned electric utility in Chattanooga, Tennessee said it is "considering filing a petition to the FCC" to overturn a state law that prevents it from offering Internet and video service outside its electric service area.

As protesters wait for the FCC to vote on a new version of itsnet neutrality rules, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is trying to draw the attention of the Washington, DC public. This morning, Ohanian officially revealed a PSA poster that is filling advertising space around the city's bus shelters. The posters play on the transportation theme, delivering a "traffic advisory" about "gridlock and new fees" imposed by internet service providers, then asking readers to call the FCC in protest. They're the result of acrowdfunding campaign that reached its goal of $20,000 earlier this week, a success Ohanian attributes to a last-minute flood of over $2,000 in dogecoin from Redditors.

I looked at some of the data dumps from vulnerable sites, and it was ... bad. I saw emails, passwords, password hints. SSL keys and session cookies. Important servers brimming with visitor IPs. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, c-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. I should probably patch OpenSSL.
